‘내가 그녀를 만났을 때(How I met your mother)’는 ‘프렌즈’의 뒤를 잇는 CBS 대표 시트콤으로, 2030년 중년의 테드가 자녀들에게 어떻게 엄마를 만나 사랑에 빠지게 됐는지 얘기해주는 방식입니다. 이야기는 2005년으로 돌아가 20대 후반의 평범한 건축가 테드가 뉴욕에서 친구들과 부대끼며 그의 연인을 찾는 과정을 코믹하게 보여줍니다.

9년 동안 마셜과 사귀었던 릴리는 “그를 떠나 나의 참모습을 찾겠다”고 선언하고 샌프란시스코로 떠납니다. 늘 릴리와 함께했던 마셜은 릴리가 떠난 지 하루도 안 돼 그녀에게 전화하려고 하지만, 테드가 말리네요.

(last night) Marshall : That’s it? We are breaking up?

Lily : Marshall, I’m sorry. I… I just need to go to San Francisco and do this art program and figure out who I am outside of us.① The only way I can do that is if… if we don’t talk for a while.

Marshall : For a while? Try never. Okay? If you walk out that door, and we are done. You’re never gonna hear my voice again.②



(this morning) Marshall : I should call her.

Ted : No. If you call her when she asked her not to, you’re just gonna look weak and you’re gonna regret it.③ Now, listen. Whenever you feel like calling her, you come find me first. Then I will punch you in the face.④

Marshall : You’re a good friend Ted.

① I just need to go to San Francisco and do this art program and figure out who I am outside of us.

나는 샌프란시스코로 가서 그 미술 프로그램에 참여하고, ‘우리 사이’가 아닌 ‘나 자신’이 누군지를 알아야겠어.

figure out은 ‘방법을 찾아내다’ ‘알아보다’라는 뜻입니다. I need to figure out what he means by that(그가 무슨 말을 하는 건지 알아봐야겠어)처럼 쓰지요.

② If you walk out that door, and we are done. You’re never gonna hear my voice again.

네가 이 문을 나서면 우리 사인 끝이야. 이제 다신 내 목소리를 못 듣게 될 거야.

We are done은 ‘우린 끝장이야’라는 의미로 주로 절교하거나 싸우고 난 뒤 사용하지만 ‘우리 이제 큰일 났다’라는 뜻도 있죠.

③ If you call her when she asked her not to, you’re just gonna look weak and you’re gonna regret it.

릴리가 전화하지 말라고 했는데 전화하면, 넌 약하게 보이고 후회하게 될 거야.

‘going to’는 구어체에서 대부분 ‘gonna’로 축약합니다. look weak는 ‘약하게 보이다’, regret은 ‘후회하다’라는 뜻이죠. I regret looking weak in front of her(그녀 앞에서 약하게 보인 것을 후회한다)처럼 사용합니다.

④ Then I will punch you in the face.

그럼 내가 네 얼굴에 한 방 먹여줄 테니까.

punch someone in the face는 ‘얼굴에 (주먹을) 한 방 먹이다’라는 뜻입니다. Stop bothering me or I will punch you in the face(날 그만 괴롭혀, 안 그러면 얼굴에 한 방 먹여줄 테니까)처럼 쓰지요.
