오바마 대통령은 북한의 로켓 발사 직후 발표한 성명에서 이번 발사는 위성으로 가장한 ‘대포동 2호 미사일’ 발사라고 규정하며 북한을 강하게 규탄했습니다. 오늘은 이와 관련한 오바마의 백악관 성명을 소개합니다.

The launch today of a Taepo-dong 2 missile/ was a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, which expressly prohibits/ North Korea from conducting ballistic missile-related activities of any kind.



오늘 발사된 북한의 대포동 2호 미사일은 탄도미사일 관련 행위를 일절 금지하는 유엔(UN) 안전보장이사회 결의안 1718호를 명백히 위반하는 것입니다.

2006년 채택된 안보리 결의안 1718호는 추가 핵실험과 탄도미사일 발사 금지, NPT 및 국제원자력기구 안전규정 이행 촉구, 대량살상무기 관련 물자에 대한 금수 조치 등의 내용을 담고 있습니다. 하지만 유엔 회원국으로 결의안을 준수할 의무가 있는 북한이 로켓 발사로 이를 위반했음이 인정되면 안보리는 제재 조치를 내놓을 수 있습니다.

With this provocative act, North Korea has ignored its international obligations, rejected unequivocal calls for restraint, and further isolated itself from the community of nations.

이러한 도발적 행위로 북한은 국제사회의 규범을 무시하고, 미사일 발사를 자제하라는 절대적인 요구를 거부했으며, 국제사회로부터 고립을 자초했습니다.

We will immediately consult with our allies in the region, including Japan and the Republic of Korea, and members of the UN Security Council/ to bring this matter/ before the Council.

미국은 즉각적으로 한국과 일본을 비롯한 주변 동맹국 및 유엔안보리 이사국들과 안보리 회부 문제를 협의할 것입니다.

I urge/ North Korea/ to abide fully by/ the resolutions of the UN Security Council and to refrain from/ further provocative actions.

North Korea has/ a pathway/ to acceptance in the international community, but it will not find/ that acceptance/ unless/ it abandons its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction/ and abides by its international obligations and commitments.
