허술한 놈이 어떻게 보안을 뚫었을까요?

미국 FOX TV에서 방송 중인 ‘라이투미(Lie to me)’는 미세표현 연구를 통해 말의 진위를 파악하는 싱크탱크 ‘라이트먼 그룹’ 소속 범죄심리 전문가들이 거짓말을 읽어내는 능력으로 사건을 해결해나가는 이야기입니다.

선거운동 중에 발생한 총기살인사건으로 미셸이라는 학생 인턴이 사망하자 라이트먼 박사는 선거운동 책임자인 에디슨을 의심하고 몇 가지 질문을 던집니다.

be동사+shaken up by~는 ‘~로부터 충격을 받다, 동요하다’라는 뜻입니다. ‘She is still shaken up by her divorce(그녀는 이혼으로 여전히 충격을 받고 있다)’처럼 사용하죠.

② I cut Michelle’s family a check for funeral expenses.

미셸 가족을 위해 장례식 비용을 지불했습니다.

cut a check는 직역하면 ‘수표 하나를 끊어(잘라)주다’라는 뜻입니다. 북미에서는 직접 가격을 써넣은 개인수표를 메모지처럼 하나씩 뜯어 지불수단으로 사용하기 때문에 이 표현은 ‘비용을 치르다, 지불하다’라는 보편적 의미로도 씁니다. ‘Tom cut me a check for $400(톰이 나에게 400달러짜리 수표를 줬다)’처럼 활용하세요.

③ To get through the terrible days ahead.

다가올 끔찍할 나날을 위한 거죠.

get/ go through는 ‘통과하다, 이겨내다’라는 의미로 사용합니다. ‘I want to get through this difficult time’은 ‘이 어려운 시기를 이겨내고 싶어요’라고 해석할 수 있죠.

nutter는 ‘미치광이’나 ‘괴짜’를 빗댄 속어입니다. ‘Get through security’는 ‘보안을 뚫다’라는 의미로 쓰죠.
