Jan So, which health plan have you decided on?
Michael I am going to go with the best, Jan. I am going to go with the one with the acupuncture, therapeutic massage, you know, the works.
Jan Wait, acupuncture? None of the plans have acupuncture. Have you looked at them closely, Michael?
Michael I think it was you who didn’t look closely enough at the Gold Plan.
Jan You know the whole reason that we’re doing this, is to save money.
Michael Well, that is kind of a tough assignment. Um… It won’t be popular decision around this office.
Jan Michael. Sometimes a manager, like yourself, has to deliver the bad news to the employees. I do it all the time.

    1. I am going to go with the one with the acupuncture, therapeutic massage.

I’m going to go with는 ‘~로 결정하겠다’는 뜻입니다. I’m going to go with a steak special(스테이크 스페셜로 주문할게요)처럼 레스토랑에서 유용하게 쓸 수 있습니다.

    2. I think it was you who didn’t look closely enough at the Gold Plan.

I think it was you who라는 문장구조는 마이클처럼 곤란한 상황을 모면하려 할 때 유용하게 쓰입니다. I think it was you who said our branch will be downsized는 ‘우리 지점이 구조조정될 거라고 말한 건 당신 같은데, 왜 이제 와서 말을 바꿉니까?’

    3. You know the whole reason that we’re doing this, is to save money.

라는 뜻으로 쓰는 ‘You know the whole reason is to’ 문장을 연습해둡시다. You know the whole reason that we are hiring new recruits is to expand our business areas(우리가 신입사원을 뽑는 이유가 사업영역을 확장하기 위해서란 것 아시죠)?

    4. Sometimes a manager, like yourself, has to deliver the bad news to the employees.

deliver the bad news가 ‘좋지 않은 소식을 전하다’는 뜻이라면 deliver the good news는 ‘좋은 소식을 전하다’, deliver speeches는 ‘연설하다’의 뜻입니다. Sometimes a leader, like yourself, has to let some employees go(당신과 같은 리더는 가끔 직원들을 해고해야 해요)와 같은 문장으로도 응용할 수 있고요.
