요즘 MBA 스쿨마다 2010년 가을학기 합격생들이 확정되고 있다. 입학처는 이들에게 축하전화를 해주도록 재학생에게 요청하는 경우도 있다. 합격생에게 굳이 축하전화를 하는 이유는 여러 학교에 붙은 우수한 복수합격자들을 유치하기 위해서다. Some of the prospective students will have been admitted and have already committed to attending Columbia, while others will have only been admitted(일부 지원자들은 합격 통지를 받을 것이고, 벌써부터 컬럼비아 입학에 열의를 보입니다. 반면 다른 일부는 단지 합격 통보만 받을 것입니다). 합격 통보를 받고도 다른 학교에 진학하는 경우도 있게 마련이다.
prospective student는 ‘지원자’로 해석하면 되고, ‘학교에 다니다’는 ‘attend + 학교명’이 무난하다. The purpose of the phone call is just to say hello, congratulate them on getting in, share your experiences and answer any questions they may have(전화를 거는 목적은 단지 인사를 하고, 합격 축하를 전하고, 그들이 갖고 있을 질문에 대해 여러분의 경험담을 들려주는 겁니다).
Make them feel welcome and excited(그들이 환영받는 느낌이 들도록, 또 기분이 좋아지게 만드세요). Invite them to come to campus and attend a class. Perhaps even do coffee or lunch(캠퍼스로 초청해 수업도 한번 들어보게 하세요. 아예 커피나 점심을 함께 할 수도 있겠죠). Remind them that even if they don’t get student housing, there are many other resources the school provides to help locate housing(설령 그들이 학교 기숙사를 얻지 못했더라도 학교에서 다른 거처를 잡아줄 방편이 많다는 점을 꼭 상기시켜주세요).
모르는 질문에 대해서는 ‘학교 당국’에 문의하라고 하면 된다. If they have Financial Aid questions, please have them call the Financial Aid Office(만일 학자금 지원에 관한 질문이 있으면 학자금 지원부로 전화하게 하세요). If they have specific interests, offer to put them in touch with someone in your cluster or a particular club(합격생들이 특정 분야에 관심을 보이면, 그들이 당신의 반이나 특정 클럽의 적당한 학생에게 연락할 수 있도록 제안해보세요). If you offer this, please make sure to follow up soon(그런데 이럴 경우엔 지체 없이 뒷일을 챙겨줘야 합니다).
