우린 친한 사이! 서로 장난삼아 공격하거든

‘내가 그녀를 만났을 때(How I met your mother)’는 ‘프렌즈’의 뒤를 잇는 CBS 대표 시트콤으로, 2030년 중년의 테드가 자녀들에게 어떻게 엄마를 만나 사랑에 빠지게 됐는지 얘기해주는 방식입니다. 이야기는 2005년으로 돌아가 20대 후반의 평범한 건축가 테드가 뉴욕에서 친구들과 부대끼며 그의 연인을 찾는 과정을 코믹하게 보여줍니다.

Robin : Hey, I thought it was going to be just us tomorrow.④

지금 테드 만나러 가는 길이야. 우리 만난 지 두 달 된 기념일이거든. 그래서 저녁 먹으러 갈 거야.

be on my way to 동사는 ‘~하러 가는 길이다’라는 뜻입니다. I’m on my way to school(학교 가는 길이야), I’m on my way to buy some groceries(식료품 사러 가는 길이야)와 같이 쓸 수 있지요.

② We bust on each other. We’re just at that place in our strong friendship.

우린 서로 공격해. 아주 친한 우정을 보여주는 그 단계거든.

bust on은 ‘격렬히 비난하다’ ‘공격하다’ ‘몸싸움을 하다’라는 뜻입니다. Close friends bust on each other for fun(친한 친구끼리는 서로 장난삼아 공격하다)처럼 쓸 수 있죠.

③ What are you guys up to?

너희 뭐 할 거야?

be up to~는 ‘~할 예정이다’라는 뜻입니다. What are you up to?는 What are you going to do?나 What are you doing?처럼 확정된 계획 등을 물어볼 때 사용합니다.

④ Hey, I thought it was going to be just us tomorrow.

이것 봐, 릴리. 내일은 우리 둘만 가는 줄 알았는데.

It is going to be just us는 ‘둘만의 약속이나 계획’을 의미합니다. 3명이라면 It is going to be three of us라고 하겠죠.
