미국 Fox에서 방송하는 드라마 ‘하우스’는 괴팍하지만 사랑할 수밖에 없는 매력을 지닌 귀여운 중년 천재의사 하우스와 그의 동료들이 희귀 질병을 진단하는 과정을 다룬 메디컬 스릴러입니다.

일반 진료실을 가득 채운 환자를 진료하기 귀찮은 괴짜 의사 하우스는 황당한 자기소개로 환자 스스로 그에게 진료받기를 꺼리게 만듭니다.

Dr. House : Hello, sick people and their loved ones. In the interest of saving time and avoiding a lot of boring chit-chat later, I’m Dr. Gregory House.① You can call me Gregg. I’m one of three doctors staffing this clinic this morning. 시간을 아끼고 나중에 재미없는 잡담을 할 필요도 없도록 말씀드리자면, 저는 그레고리 하우스 박사입니다.

in the interest of~는 ‘~을 하기 위한 수단으로, ~을 위해’라는 뜻으로 ‘In the interest of fairness, we will examine all the facts(공정성을 기하기 위해 모든 사실관계를 조사할 겁니다)’처럼 사용합니다.

② I’m a “board” certified diagnostician with a double specialty of infectious disease and nephrology.

저는 전문의이자 두 가지 분야의 전문 자격증이 있습니다. 감염질환과 신장학입니다.

board certified diagnostician은 ‘위원회에서 전문 자격증을 부여한 전문의’라는 뜻인데요, 재미있게도 하우스는 ‘board’라는 단어를 유난히 길게 강조하며 마치 ‘지루하다’라는 뜻의 형용사 ‘bored’로 들리게 하는군요.

③ I’m also the only doctor currently employed at this clinic who’s forced to be here against his will.

그리고 이 병원 전체에서 저 혼자만 여기 있고 싶지 않은데 억지로 여기 있게 됐죠.

be forced to~는 ‘억지로 ~하다’라는 뜻으로 ‘I was forced to leave(저는 강제로 떠나야만 했어요)’처럼 사용합니다.

④ Maybe I’m too stoned to tell. So, who wants me?

어쩌면 저는 약에 취해 있는지도 모르죠. 그럼 저한테 진료받으실 분?

be stoned는 ‘(술이나 약에) 취하다, 몽롱해지다’라는 뜻의 속어입니다.
