Michael Just hear me out. What is more important than quality? Equality. Now, studies show that today’s woman, the Ally McBeal woman, as I call her, is at a crossroads.

여직원 대상의 워크숍을 위해 본사에서 잰이 스크랜턴 지사를 방문했습니다. 회의실에서 여직원들만 모아놓고 세미나를 하는데 마이클이 참견을 하는 상황입니다.
1. Women today, though we have the same options as men, we often face a very different set of obstacles in getting there. 오늘날 여성이 남성과 같은 조건을 갖추고 있음에도 성공을 위해서는 보통의 남성들과는 아주 다른 장벽을 경험하게 됩니다.
‘여직원이 남직원만큼 능력이 있어도(have the same options), 남성과는 다른 장벽을 경험한다(face a very different set of obstacles)’는 잰의 말에 여러분도 동의하시나요? in getting there는 ‘거기 도착하는 것’, 즉 ‘성공하기 위해’를 의미합니다.
2. I thought we agreed that you wouldn’t be here. 여기 들어오지 않겠다고 약속하신 걸로 알고 있는데요.
I thought we agreed that~은 약속한 사항을 다시 확인하는 표현입니다. 상대가 약속을 어겼거나 기억하지 못하고 있음을 암시하는 표현으로 유용합니다. I thought we agreed to meet today for lunch. How could you stand me up(오늘 점심에 만나기로 약속한 걸로 기억하는데, 어떻게 절 바람맞힐 수 있죠)?처럼 응용해봅시다.
3. Just hear me out. What is more important than quality? Equality. 제 말 좀 들어봐요. 질보다 중요한 게 무엇이죠? 평등이죠.
마이클은 수사의문문을 통해 스스로 질문하고 답하고 있습니다. Equality, 즉 평등을 강조하기 위해 quality를 끌어들였습니다. What is more important than wealth? Health(재물보다 중요한 게 무엇인가요? 건강이죠)가 비슷한 예입니다. Just here me out은 ‘제 말 좀 들어주세요’라는 의미이고요.
4. Now, studies show that today’s woman, the Ally McBeal woman, as I call her, is at a crossroads. 조사에 따르면 오늘날의 여성, 저는 앨리 맥빌과 같은 여성들이라고 부르는데, 그들은 기로에 서 있어요.
마이클은 검증도 안 된 연구를 들먹이며 현대여성을 드라마 여주인공 앨리 맥빌에 비교하면서 이들이 교차로에 서 있다(be at a crossroads), 즉 결정을 해야 하는 상황에 있다고 말합니다. Alex is at a crossroads in his family and personal life(알렉스는 가족과 개인 삶의 사이에서 선택해야 하는 기로에 서 있습니다)와 같이 응용해봅시다.
