미국 CBS에서 방영 중인 ‘멘탈리스트(The Mentalist)’는 한때 영매사였던 주인공 패트릭 제인이 캘리포니아 연방수사국 컨설턴트로 일하며 자신의 아내와 딸을 살해한 연쇄살인범 레드존을 쫓는 이야기입니다.

연방수사국장은 고위층 간부 부인에게 무례하게 군 패트릭 제인에게 화가 나, 반장 리스본과 제인을 질책합니다.

Chief : I’m disappointed. I, I’m, I’m very disappointed, and I’m embarrassed. How could you do this to me? 시장에게 내 휘하 중 최고만 보내겠노라 얘기했단 말이야.

put one’s best people on something은 ‘일처리를 위해 (부하직원 중) 최고를 보내다’라는 의미로 I put my best researchers on this project(이 프로젝트를 위해 휘하 중 최고의 연구원을 보냈다)처럼 씁니다.

② Is this-Is this real or is that decaf? I mean, how am I supposed to know which is which?

이게 오리지널이야, 카페인 없는 커피야? 뭐가 뭔지 무슨 수로 알겠어?

real coffee는 오리지널 커피, decaf는 decaffeinated coffee, 즉 카페인을 뺀 커피를 의미합니다. How am I supposed to know~?는 ‘무슨 수로 ~을 알겠어?’라는 뜻으로 How am I supposed to know our competitor’s marketing plans(무슨 수로 경쟁의 마케팅 계획을 알겠어)?처럼 사용합니다.

③ What kind of idiot drinks decaf anyway? What is the point?

카페인 없는 커피를 마시는 머저리 같은 짓은 왜 하는 거야? 그럼 마실 필요가 없잖아?

What kind of idiot는 ‘어떤 바보 같은 사람이 ~같은 걸 하겠어?’라는 뜻으로 그런 행동을 한 대상을 경멸하는 뉘앙스입니다. What kind of idiot believes without clear evidence(도대체 어떤 바보가 확실한 증거 없이 믿겠어)?처럼요.

④ And what were you thinking leaving this man alone at an event like that?

자넨 도대체 무슨 생각으로 이 사람을 그런 행사에 혼자 두고 온 거야?

What were you thinking은 ‘도대체 무슨 생각으로 ~을 한 건가?’라는 표현이지요. What were you thinking hiring Jane(도대체 무슨 생각으로 제인을 채용한 거요)?처럼 씁니다.
