미국 워싱턴의 백악관 집무실인 오벌 오피스에서 이명박 대통령(왼쪽)과 버락 오바마 대통령이 단독 정상회담을 갖고 한미 동맹관계를 재확인했다.

6월16일(현지시간) 열린 한미정상회담은 한반도 문제 해결을 위한 구체적 틀을 마련했다는 평가를 받습니다. 오바마 대통령의 한미정상회담 첫 번째 이야기입니다.

We meet at a time of great challenges. On the Korean peninsula, North Korea has abandoned its own commitments and violated international law.

Its nuclear and ballistic missile programs pose a grave threat to peace and security of Asia and to the world.

In the face of these threats and provocations, the people of the Republic of Korea have shown a steadiness and a resolve that has earned the respect of the United States and of the world.

Today, President Lee and I reiterated our shared commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

오늘 이 자리에서 이명박 대통령과 저는 한반도의 완전한 비핵화를 위한 공통의 합의를 반복해서 선언하는 바입니다.

We have reaffirmed the endurance of our alliance, and America’s commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea.

And we discussed the measures that we are taking with our partners in the region - including Russia, China and Japan - to make it clear to North Korea that it will not find security or respect through threats and illegal weapons.

우리는 러시아 중국 일본을 포함한 6자회담에 참가하는 5개국과 함께, 북한이 위협과 불법 무기를 통해서는 안보와 존경을 얻을 수 없을 것이라는 사실을 분명히 하기 위해 어떠한 조치를 취해야 할지 논의했습니다.

That united international front has been on full display since North Korea’s ballistic missile test in April, and was further galvanized by its recent nuclear test.

On Friday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution that called for strong steps to block North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

지난 금요일 유엔 안전보장이사회는 만장일치로 북한의 핵무기 개발과 탄도미사일 발사 프로그램 저지를 강력하게 요구하는 결의안을 받아들였습니다.

Now we must pursue a sustained and robust effort to implement this resolution together with our international partners.
